The Dead Sea
Ok, who knew that there were palm trees in this country. I had no idea!
Wow, the Dead Sea is so salty! You just can't imagine how salty it is until you taste it. I about gagged, blah!!! And a little FYI for those of you who may go someday, don't get any of that water near your eyes. Ouch, it burns!!! Lol, from experience!
But it's so fun to swim in. You just float, and even you tried you coudn't sink yourself. We had a great time!
Masada....how well do you know your history?
This horrifying scene is the remains of the encampment of the Roman soldiers who laid siege to the Jewish Zealots who had held up at Masada, which was just above on the plateau. The Jewish Zealots held out for three long years after the Temple was destroyed and Jerusalem was brought down to rubble and burned to ashes.
Masada was the last fortress of the Jews and every other Jewish stronghold was captured. It was just a matter of time, so the Jewish Zealots committed suicide, after deciding that death was better for them than capture by the Romans.
Josephus tells us that the Jews were successful at holding off the Roman Legion for seven months. However, on Passover the year 73 AD, the Jews acknowledged that their cause was lost. Rather than fall under the burden of Roman slavery, 960 men, women, and children, led by Elazar Ben Yair, committed mass suicide.
